amend에서 mend가 fault를 의미하는데, commend는 칭찬하다는 의미이고 amend와 동일한 mend가 들어가는데 이때 mend도 fault인가? 하는 의문이 들었다. 또 sufficient는 충분한을 의미하는데 fic이 do, make이라면 suf는 무슨의미인지 궁금하다.
답: https://www.etymonline.com에서 직접 확인 가능하단다! amend (v.)
early 13c., "to free from faults, rectify," from Old French amender "correct, set right, make better, improve" (12c.), from Latin emendare "to correct, free from fault," from ex "out" (see ex-) + menda "fault, blemish,"commend (v.)
mid-14c., comenden, "praise, mention approvingly," from Latin commendare "to commit to the care or keeping (of someone), to entrust to; to commit to writing;" hence "to set off, render agreeable, praise," from com-, here probably an intensive prefix (see com-), + mandare "to commit to one's charge" (see mandate (n.)). A doublet of command.
amend의 mend는 fault, commend의 mend는 command에서와 관련 있는 말로, 원래 '~에게 맡기다'라는 말에서 기원했다.
~에게 무엇을 맡긴다면, 그를 믿는다는 말이고, 그를 믿었다면 그를 칭찬한다는 것이고... 이런 식으로 진행한거지^^.
또, sufficient의 경우도 찾아봤는데,
surpass 같은 경우 sur-이 super의 변형이거든.
sur- (1)
word-forming element meaning "over, above, beyond, in addition," especially in words from Anglo-French and Old French, from Old French sour-, sor-, sur-, from Latin super "above, over," from PIE root *uper "over."
난 그런 경우일거라고 예상했는데,
찾아보니 substitute를 만든다는 뜻에서 충분한이 되었대. 밑에 뭘 보태주면 보충이 되니까 넉넉해졌다는 말이라는 거지.
